Vandalia Embraces Good Neighbor Week By Brandie Gay Vandalia is gearing up to participate in Missouri’s Good Neighbor Week, which runs from September 30th through October 4th. This annual event, established in 2022, encourages residents across the state to engage in acts of kindness and foster stronger connections within their communities. Good Neighbor Week is a statewide initiative that aims to promote neighborly behavior and community spirit. During this week, Vandalia residents are encouraged to perform simple acts of kindness, such as helping a neighbor with yard work, sharing a meal, or simply taking the time to get to know someone new. The goal is to create a more connected and supportive community, one small act at a time. Vandalia has always been a town that values community and togetherness. This year, the city is taking its commitment to the next level by actively participating in Good Neighbor Week. Local organizations, schools, and businesses are encouraged to come together to plan events and activities that will bring residents closer and highlight the importance of being a good neighbor. Throughout the week, the city suggests activities designed to encourage community engagement. These include Community Clean-Up Day: Residents can gather to clean up local parks and public spaces, making Vandalia a more beautiful place to live. Neighborly Acts Challenge: A friendly competition where residents can report their acts of kindness. The most creative and impactful acts will be recognized at the end of the week. The final one, Recognition of Outstanding Neighbors: Nominations are open for Vandalia’s most engaged and helpful neighbors. Winners will receive special recognition and a small gift. Getting involved and participating in Good Neighbor Week is easy and rewarding. Residents can start by thinking of simple ways to help those around them. Whether it’s mowing a neighbor’s lawn, offering to run errands, or just taking the time to chat, every act of kindness counts. Vandalia residents are also encouraged to report their acts of kindness on the Missouri Good Neighbor Week website, contributing to the state’s goal of documenting 20,000 acts of neighboring. This event not only strengthens community bonds but also sets a positive example for future generations. By participating in Good Neighbor Week, Vandalia is demonstrating its commitment to kindness, connection, and community. Good Neighbor Week is supported by statewide partners, MU Extension Office of Missouri, The Hopeful Neighborhood Project, and Habitat for Humanity. University of Missouri Extension is a valued and trusted educational solution to improve the quality of life in Missouri, the nation and the world. The Hopeful Neighborhood Project inspires and equips everyday neighbors to pursue the common good right where they live by providing free events and resources at www.hopefulneighborhood.org. Local Missouri Habitat for Humanities are partnering with Missouri Good Neighbor Week to repair, rebuild and restore communities around Missouri.
