newly painted blue water tower for the city of vandalia

The City of Vandalia has completed a major upgrade to its elevated water tower, wrapping up a successful repainting project that began with a competitive bid process earlier this spring.

On March 11, the city—alongside engineering firm Popping Stone & Bach—held a bid opening for the exterior painting of the tower. The Vandalia City Council later approved the winning bid from Maguire Iron, Inc., awarding the project for $156,000.

Over the course of just a few weeks, Maguire Iron completed the repainting, giving the tower a fresh new look and ensuring its continued durability. With the work finalized, the tower has now been refilled and is fully operational once again.

City officials extended their gratitude to Vandalia residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the process. The temporary adjustments to water service were met with understanding, helping the project stay on schedule and within budget.

Why Painting a Water Tower Matters

Painting a water tower is far more than a cosmetic upgrade—it’s a vital part of infrastructure maintenance. These towering structures are constantly exposed to the elements, and without proper coatings, they can suffer from corrosion, structural damage, and even contamination risks.

  • Corrosion Protection: The paint acts as a barrier against moisture and oxygen, preventing rust and degradation of the steel surface.

  • Water Quality Assurance: Specialized coatings help seal the tower, reducing the risk of contaminants entering the water supply.

  • Structural Longevity: Regular painting extends the life of the tower, reducing the need for costly repairs or replacements.

  • Community Identity: Many towns use their water towers as visual landmarks, often featuring logos, slogans, or city names that foster civic pride.

With Vandalia’s tower now freshly coated and back in service, the city has taken a proactive step in preserving both its infrastructure and its identity.
